As a true Aquarian and emerging artist at 60 my art style is somewhat contrary and a little hard to define. My essence is a nature loving , rather nostalgic and romantic, gypsy free spirit. I am living my dream near Nimbin on Bundjalung country of the Widgibal Wialbul people. Here I PLAY | PAINT| CREATE at the edge of the rainforest in my tiny timber cabin/studio home. It is what I call my little patch of paradise.
My best memories are of swimming and fishing the Barwon and Naomi rivers and the red dirt of Gamileroi country. Skimming stones and making cubby houses under river willows and pepper trees of the Lachlan my childhood was spent in nature and life was simple. Born 10th of 13 children in Walgett, my wonder years were in NSW bush towns. The natural world is where I am at peace and features predominantly in my art.
From the age of 12 the village of Gooloogong was home on Wiradjurri country, near the foot of the Kangaroobie Hills.
My free spirit translates to my paintings being quite diverse. Ranging from realistic representations to loose, slightly abstract or pop art pieces, utilising brush, palette knife and at times finger painting techniques. Painting in Ink, Acrylic, Oul pastels and Watercolour, creating art that appeals to a broad audience. I am fearless in my approach to my creativity and a joyful person, I wish to bring the joy I feel into my art for art lovers and collectors. For this reason since commencing painting I have also been working on a bespoke website to offer a my art and guest artists fine art work as quality reproductions for many to access affordable art.
These first 18months have been wonderful. I have completed several commission pieces and had my Acrylic pallete knife piece ‘Minty Eucaalypt’ hung as a finalist in Aspire Gallery Paddington Brisbane, as part of their ‘Petite Pieces’ 2023 exhibition.
I have shown in the ‘Aspects Art Show’ in Goondiwindi QLD 2023 with sales resulting from this wonderful show. Collaboration with a Goondiwindi Home wares /Art Gallery store Nutmeg Home had resulted in sales with over a dozen of my pieces hanging, representing works over 2022/2023. Also during 2023 I've shown in the Nimbin Art Autumnand Spring Art Fairs, with pieces also hanging at the Blue Knob Hall Gallery, Nimbin for their "Rainbow and Rivers" exhibition where the focus was the childrens art, exhibiting as part of the 50th Anniversary of The Aquarius Festival.
My dream to paint became reality since a serendipitous meeting in 2017 with a visiting Albanian artist Gjoka Genc on Queenslands Gold Coast.
Meeting Gjoka was key to me picking up a pencil for the first time since high school. After a long day as manager of a Disability and Aged Care organisation in Sydney I began to sketch a little at night to relax and send them to Gjoka for critique.
Gjoka saw something in me and encouraged me to, “draw what you see Liz " and told me to "practice, practice, practice’.
My friendship with the artist grew into a mentorship across years, oceans and miles to this day and pivotal to my belief I could one day paint full time.
As an eternal optimist, I allowed myself that dream which I now am realising.
Adopting the Japanese concept of Ikigai to follow my true vocation I walked away from corporate life and moved to Nimbin in 2021. Soon after I was introduced to watercolour at Blue Knob Hall Gallery with Katie Lloyd in a 4 hour class. In the words of my dear mother “to be true unto thine ownself” I commenced my crestive practice in ernest.
Covid lockdowns prevented art classes so I developed my art skills at home, utilising online tutorials and daring myself to create paintings from my own subjects. Resulting in a portrait of my mother and her beloved Magpie and my first landscape painting “Blue Knob’ -the view from my cabin.
