I have long been influenced by traditional and contemporary Japanese art, design and culture. As a Japanese language teacher, I completed an honours degree in Japanese studies and have made numerous trips to Japan over the years. These experiences have helped guide my love of simplicity, order and appreciation of nature. My interest in paper art began after a purchase of several sheets of lace washi (Japanese paper) in Tokyo. I wondered how to best display such delicate paper.
Tissue paper is my medium of choice because of its transluscent quality, the textures it can be used to create, the colours that can be achieved with such a limited palette and the design parameters that using tissue paper necessitates. I also relish the opportunity of incorporating washi into my pieces in order that it may provide an additional textural element to my works.
While always being a lover of art and being creative from a young age, my early experiments with tissue paper were primarily torn pieces. Only recently have I begun to create pieces solely from cut paper featuring geometric and, at times, repetitive shapes often with a more neutral colour palette. |
